The Imperative in German

🎯 The Imperative is used to give commands, advice, or requests. In German, each pronoun (du, ihr, Sie) has a different imperative form.

💡 The Three Imperative Forms

1. du Imperative — informal singular

Rule: du form - remove -st (+ sometimes drop Umlaut)

Verb du Present Imperative
kommen du kommst Komm! (Come!)
gehen du gehst Geh! (Go!)
spielen du spielst Spiel! (Play!)
warten du wartest Warte! (Wait!)
lesen du liest Lies! (Read!)
sehen du siehst Sieh! (Look!)
fahren du fährst Fahr! (Drive!)

2. ihr Imperative — informal plural

Rule: same as ihr present form

3. Sie Imperative — formal (singular & plural)

Rule: Sie form + verb + Sie (inverted)

⚠️ Irregular Verbs in Imperative

sein — to be (completely irregular)

haben — to have

Form Imperative
du Hab! (Have!)
ihr Habt! (Have!)
Sie Haben Sie! (Have!)

werden — to become

Form Imperative
du Werde! (Become!)
ihr Werdet! (Become!)
Sie Werden Sie! (Become!)

🎯 Golden Rule

du → take du form and remove -st (Umlaut sometimes drops)
ihr → same as ihr present form
Sie → verb + Sie (inverted order)
