Uhrzeit: halb und Viertel — Telling Time: Official and Colloquial

🔙 Back to Grammar Index

🎯 Lesson Objectives

  • Read the time in the official way (24-hour system) and in everyday colloquial German.
  • Understand the most famous trap for learners: halb refers to the coming hour, not the one mentioned!
  • Use Viertel nach and Viertel vor to express quarter hours.

📚 Two Ways of Telling Time

German offers two common ways to tell time, and both are used constantly in daily life:

Time (digital) Official reading (offiziell) Colloquial reading (umgangssprachlich)
8:00 acht Uhr acht
8:15 acht Uhr fünfzehn Viertel nach acht
8:30 acht Uhr dreißig halb neun ⚠️
8:45 acht Uhr fünfundvierzig Viertel vor neun

📌 Official style: hours first, then the word Uhr, then the minutes: - 14:30 → vierzehn Uhr dreißig - 19:05 → neunzehn Uhr null fünf

📌 Colloquial style: minutes first, then the hour: - nach (past): zehn nach acht = 8:10 - vor (to): zehn vor neun = 8:50

⚠️ The Big Trap: halb

halb always goes together with the next hour — not the one mentioned!

From 7:30 we are on our way towards eight, so Germans say halb acht:

What is said Actual time
halb acht 7:30 (not 8:30!)
halb neun 8:30
halb zwölf 11:30

💡 Memory trick: ask yourself "which hour are we moving towards?" — that is the hour after halb.

🌍 Regional note: in some eastern regions (such as Saxony) you will also hear Viertel neun (= 8:15) and dreiviertel neun (= 8:45). You only need them for understanding; the general usage is nach/vor.

✅ Examples

  • Es ist halb zehn. Ich muss schlafen. — It's 9:30. I have to sleep.
  • Der Zug kommt Viertel vor sieben an. — The train arrives at 6:45.
  • Wir treffen uns um Viertel nach drei. — We'll meet at 3:15.
  • Offiziell: Die Sprechstunde beginnt um 17:45 Uhr (siebzehn Uhr fünfundvierzig). — Officially: office hours start at 5:45 pm.
  • Es ist schon zehn vor halb acht. (= 7:20) — It's already 7:20.

📌 vor/nach can even be combined with halb itself in fast speech: zehn vor halb acht = a quarter of an hour before 7:30, i.e. 7:20.
