An article for level A2 — in an old box, Yusuf finds photos of his grandfather's vacations. A story about memories, travel and big wishes.

The old box

On Saturday Yusuf cleans his grandfather's room and finds a box under the bed that nobody has opened for many years:

  • Am Samstag putzt Yusuf das Zimmer seines Großvaters. — On Saturday Yusuf cleans his grandfather's room.
  • Unter dem Bett findet er eine alte Kiste mit Fotos. — Under the bed he finds an old box with photos.
  • Darin liegen Bilder von Reisen vor vierzig Jahren. — Inside there are pictures from trips forty years ago.
  • „Opa, bist das du am Strand?“, fragt Yusuf. — "Grandpa, is that you on the beach?" Yusuf asks.

Grandfather's stories from the past

Grandfather Walter loves telling stories about the past, and the photos open the door to his memory. His first trip to Italy was a real adventure:

  • Großvater Walter erzählt gern von früher. — Grandfather Walter likes talking about the past.
  • „Früher fuhren wir mit dem Zug nach Italien. Die Reise dauerte zwei Tage.“ — "In the past we traveled by train to Italy. The trip took two days."
  • „Es gab kein Internet und keine Handys, aber wir hatten viel Spaß.“ — "There was no internet and no mobile phones, but we had a lot of fun."
  • Er zeigt ein Foto vom Meer und sagt: „Diese Erinnerung ist wie Gold für mich.“ — He shows a photo of the sea and says: "This memory is like gold to me."

The grandfather's wish and the grandson's wish

Yusuf asks his grandfather about his dreams today, and discovers that each of them has a completely different travel dream:

  • Yusuf will wissen, wohin sein Großvater heute reisen möchte. — Yusuf wants to know where his grandfather would like to travel today.
  • „Ich träume von Portugal“, sagt Opa, „das Meer dort ist wunderschön.“ — "I dream of Portugal," says Grandpa, "the sea there is beautiful."
  • Yusuf hat auch einen Wunsch: eine Radtour durch Deutschland mit Freunden. — Yusuf also has a wish: a bike tour through Germany with friends.
  • Vielleicht können sie nächstes Jahr zusammen fahren — der Enkel und der Großvater. — Perhaps they can travel together next year — the grandson and the grandfather.

A plan for the next vacation

Before leaving the room, the grandfather and grandson make a small plan, and Yusuf photographs the old pictures so they never get lost:

  • Sie machen einen Plan: erst ein Wochenende in den Bergen, später die große Reise. — They make a plan: first a weekend in the mountains, later the big trip.
  • Yusuf fotografiert die alten Bilder mit seinem Handy. — Yusuf photographs the old pictures with his phone.
  • So bleiben die Erinnerungen sicher — und neue Träume bekommen Platz. — This way the memories stay safe — and new dreams find room.
