3. 📖 Grammar Rule — The verb "sein" with professions

Rule: Ich bin + Profession

sein (to be) is the most important verb in German. You use it with professions:

Pronoun sein (to be) Example
ich bin Ich bin Schüler.
du bist Du bist Student.
er / sie / es ist Er ist Lehrer.
wir sind Wir sind Schüler.
ihr seid Ihr seid Studenten.
sie / Sie sind Sie sind Ärztin.

🎯 Summary — 3 Simple Steps:

Step What to do Example
1 Ask "Was bist du von Beruf?" What's your job?
2 Choose the right profession Lehrer (teacher)
3 Say Ich bin + Profession 🎉 Ich bin Lehrer.

⚠️ Note: In German, you do NOT use a / an (ein/eine) before the profession! You say "Ich bin Lehrer" (NOT "Ich bin ein Lehrer").

4. 🗣️ Conversation — At School (In der Schule)

Dialogue 1: What do you want to become?

Person A: Hallo! Wie heißt du? Person B: Ich heiße Ahmed. Person A: Was bist du von Beruf? Person B: Ich bin Schüler. Und du? Person A: Ich bin Student. Ich studiere Medizin. Person B: Was möchtest du werden? Person A: Ich möchte Arzt werden.

5. ✍️ The Rule in the Simplest Way

🔑 The verb "möchten" (would like / want)

möchten means "would like" or "want". You use it to talk about something you want in the future.

du möchtest Du möchtest Lehrer werden.
er / sie / es möchte Sie möchte Ärztin werden.
wir möchten Wir möchten Studenten sein.
ihr möchtet Ihr möchtet Polizisten werden.

➕ Additional Grammar

Official grammar points from this unit that were not covered in detail above — here is a quick summary.

🔹 The modal verb wollen (to want)

You learned möchten (would like — polite). Now wollen — a stronger wish, a clear plan:

Pronoun wollen Example
ich will Ich will Lehrer werden.
du willst Du willst Arzt werden.
er / sie / es will Sie will Polizistin werden.
wir wollen Wir wollen Deutsch lernen.
ihr wollt Ihr wollt in Berlin studieren.
sie / Sie wollen Sie wollen viel lernen.

The infinitive goes to the end, exactly like möchte:

Question Answer
Was willst du werden? Ich will Koch werden.
Wollt ihr in München studieren? Ja, wir wollen in München studieren.

Compare the strength of the wish:

Ich möchte Arzt werden. — I would like to become a doctor (polite).
Ich will Arzt werden. — I want to become a doctor (a clear, firm goal).

⚠️ Common mistake: The conjugation is irregular: we say ich will (NOT ~~ich willst~~!) and du willst (NOT ~~du willt~~!).

💡 Golden tip: And remember können from Lesson 8 — it works exactly the same way: the infinitive always goes at the end of the sentence.

🔹 Temporal prepositions seit • vor • in

Three words that tell when something started and when it will happen:

Preposition Meaning Example Translation
seit since / for (still going on) Seit einem Jahr lerne ich Deutsch. I have been learning German for a year.
vor ago (a point in the past) Vor einem Jahr war ich Schüler. A year ago I was a school student.
in in (in the future) In einer Woche ist die Prüfung. The exam is in one week.

On the timeline:

Vor einem Jahr war ich Schüler. Heute bin ich Student. In einem Jahr mache ich die Prüfung.
A year ago I was at school. Today I am a university student. And in a year I will take the exam.

⚠️ Common mistake: With seit, Germans use the present tense, not the past: Ich wohne seit 2020 in München. — I have been living in Munich since 2020.

💡 Golden tip: seit + time point (seit Montag, seit 2020) • vor + elapsed period (vor einem Jahr, vor zwei Tagen) • in + upcoming period (in einem Monat).
