📚 Core Rule

indem answers the question Wie? Wodurch? (how? by what means?) — it describes the tool or method you use to achieve something.

Examples

  • Ich verbessere mein Deutsch, indem ich jeden Tag Podcasts höre. — I improve my German by listening to podcasts every day.
  • Sie spart Strom, indem sie weniger heizt. — She saves electricity by heating less.
  • Man schützt die Umwelt, indem man öffentliche Verkehrsmittel benutzt. — You protect the environment by using public transport.
  • Indem du laut wiederholst, merkst du dir die Wörter besser. — By repeating out loud, you remember the words better.

📌 If the indem clause moves to the front, the main-clause verb comes immediately in first position after it: Indem man regelmäßig übt, verbessert man sich schnell.

The Formal Alternative: dadurch ..., dass ...

In more formal language (especially written) the same meaning can be expressed like this:

  • Er hat es geschafft, dadurch dass er viel geübt hat. — He succeeded by practising a lot.

⚖️ indem, not weil and not damit

All three introduce subordinate clauses, but each answers a different question:

weil Warum? (why?) Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
damit Wozu? (for what purpose?) Ich erkläre es langsam, damit alle es verstehen.

🔍 Quick test: try inserting "by doing this / by means of" before the second clause — if the meaning works, you need indem.
