🎯 Sometimes we want to admit part of a statement and then say the opposite: "The hotel is indeed expensive, but it is very nice." For this purpose German uses the pair zwar … aber: zwar appears in the first sentence to concede part of the meaning, then aber follows after the comma to present the contrast or surprise.

Structure and Word Order

first clause + zwar + rest  ,  aber + second clause in normal order

zwar usually goes directly after the conjugated verb or in an early position of the middle field.
aber is a connector that takes no position; the clause after it therefore keeps its normal order (subject, then verb).

Die Wohnung ist zwar klein, aber sie liegt sehr zentral.	zwar after the verb ist; the aber-clause is normal.
Er kann zwar gut kochen, aber backen kann er nicht.	zwar after the auxiliary kann.
Zwar hat das Hotel keinen Pool, aber der Strand ist ganz nah.	zwar may also start the first clause and occupy position 1.

📌 Difference from sondern: sondern is used only after a negated statement to correct it, while zwar … aber admits the first part and then adds a contrast without negating it.

💡 You can strengthen the contrast by adding allerdings or doch after aber: Das Zimmer war zwar klein, aber doch gemütlich.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

❌ Using zwar without aber: Die Wohnung ist zwar klein. — the sentence feels incomplete; a concession needs a contrasting completion.
❌ Placing zwar before the subject unnaturally in the middle of the sentence: Die Wohnung zwar ist klein → ✅ Die Wohnung ist zwar klein.
❌ Inverting the word order after aber as if it were a subordinating conjunction: …, aber sie liegt zentral ✓ not …, aber liegt sie zentral ✗.
