A plan before shopping

On Saturday Lena invites six friends to her birthday party. But her budget is limited, so she starts planning before going to any shop:

  • Lena lädt am Samstag sechs Freunde zum Geburtstag ein. — On Saturday Lena invites six friends to her birthday.
  • Ihr Budget ist klein: nur 80 Euro für Essen und Dekoration. — Her budget is small: only 80 euros for food and decoration.

Comparing prices

In the supermarket Lena does not grab the first product she sees — she compares and thinks. Then she goes to the weekly market where prices are better:

  • Im Supermarkt vergleicht sie zuerst die Preise. — In the supermarket she compares the prices first.
  • Auf dem Markt sind Tomaten und Trauben billiger als im Supermarkt. — At the market, tomatoes and grapes are cheaper than in the supermarket.
  • Sie zahlt bar, dann gibt sie nicht zu viel Geld aus. — She pays in cash, so she does not spend too much money.

The party dress from the second-hand shop

For the party dress Lena goes to a second-hand clothing store. There she hears a sentence she will remember for a long time:

  • Für das Partykleid geht sie in ein Second-Hand-Geschäft. — For the party dress she goes to a second-hand shop.
  • Dort findet sie ein schönes Kleid für nur acht Euro. — There she finds a beautiful dress for only eight euros.
  • „Gebraucht heißt nicht schlecht“, sagt die Verkäuferin, „oft ist die Qualität besser.“ — "Used does not mean bad," says the saleswoman, "often the quality is better."
  • Nur für die Getränke benutzt Lena ihre Bankkarte, denn sie sammelt Bonuspunkte. — Only for the drinks does Lena use her bank card, because she collects bonus points.

The result at the end

At the final count a small amount remains in Lena's wallet — and that is her real success:

  • Am Ende bleiben zwölf Euro übrig. — In the end, twelve euros remain.

  • Ihre Freundinnen fragen: „Wo hast du so günstig eingekauft?“ — Her friends ask: "Where did you shop so cheaply?"
  • Lena lacht: „Mit einer Liste, einem Vergleich und etwas Geduld!“ — Lena laughs: "With a list, a comparison and some patience!"
