📺 Instructional Video

An instructional video explaining this grammar topic with practical examples.

🎯 Lesson goals

  • Understand what Präpositionaladverbs are and how they replace a preposition + noun/pronoun.
  • Learn the formation with da(r) and wo(r).
  • Practice using common adverbs in everyday sentences.

📚 Core rule

Präpositionaladverbs are words that stand in for a prepositional phrase. They are built from the stem da (or dar) or wo plus the original preposition. Use da‑ when the phrase refers to a definite object ("that"), and wo‑ when it refers to a location or a question.

Basic preposition with da(r) with wo(r)
darauf da(r) + darauf wo(r) + darauf
darüber da(r) + darüber wo(r) + darüber
damit da(r) + damit wo(r) + damit
davon da(r) + davon wo(r) + davon
womit wo(m) + womit wo(r) + womit

Typical pitfalls

  • da‑ is used when the reference is definite ("that"), e.g., Ich warte darauf (I wait for that).
  • wo‑ is used for questions or non‑specific references, e.g., Womit fährst du? (With what are you traveling?).
  • In some cases da‑ becomes dar‑ before a vowel‑starting preposition (e.g., darauf).

Examples

  • Ich warte darauf. – I am waiting for that.
  • Womit fährst du? – With what are you traveling?
  • Er spricht darüber. – He talks about it.
  • Sie denkt daran. – She thinks about that.
  • Wir freuen uns darüber. – We are happy about it.
