Redemittel — Phrase Bank (A1 → B1)
🔙 Back to Grammar Index · 🗺️ Smart Study Plan
This is a reference page collecting more than 80 ready-made expressions (Redemittel) covering six core language functions from level A1 up to B1. Redemittel are fixed "sentence templates": you keep the frame and only swap in your own information. They are the fastest route to fluent speech, because you no longer build every sentence from zero.
This page is tables only — no interactive exercises here. To apply these phrases in practice, see the lessons on Präteritum and Perfekt.
🎯 What you will find here
- 85 expressions sorted by function: opinion & justification, suggestions, apologies, comparison, time narration, and formal emails.
- The level of each expression (A1 / A2 / B1) so you know what fits your current stage.
- One complete example per expression with its English meaning.
- Register hints: some expressions belong to friendly everyday talk, others to exams or professional emails.
- A section on typical learner mistakes when using these templates.
📚 How to read the tables
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Expression | The fixed frame you memorize; the dots (...) mark where your information goes |
| Level | The CEFR level this expression typically belongs to |
| Example | A full sentence showing the expression in a realistic everyday context |
| Meaning | The English meaning of the example |
Memorization tip: pick only three expressions per table and use them in real speech for one week before adding three more. An expression you never use in conversation disappears from memory quickly.

🙏 3) Apologizing (Sich entschuldigen)
The key contrast: Entschuldigung opens a conversation or grabs attention, while Es tut mir leid apologizes for something that actually went wrong. Formal situations upgrade to Ich möchte mich ... entschuldigen.
| Expression | Level | Example | Meaning |

⚖️ 4) Comparison (Vergleichen)
Two rules carry most of the work: als follows a comparative form, and wie follows so. At B1 more abstract comparisons appear, such as Im Vergleich zu and the Je ..., desto ... structure.
| Expression | Level | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| ... ist ...(comparative) als ... | A2 | Die Wohnung ist billiger als das Hotel. | The apartment is cheaper than the hotel. |

| am wenigsten | B1 | Diese Lösung kostet am wenigsten Zeit. | This solution takes the least time. |
🕰️ 5) Narrating in Time (Chronologisch erzählen)
These connectors are the "glue of the story": they link the events of your day or experience into a clear timeline instead of a choppy chain of sentences all starting with ich.
| Expression | Level | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| zuerst | A2 | Zuerst frühstücke ich, dann gehe ich los. | First I have breakfast, then I head out. |
| dann / danach | A1/A2 | Ich lerne zwei Stunden, danach sehe ich fern. | I study for two hours, after that I watch TV. |

| nachdem | B1 | Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich noch spazieren. | After I had eaten, I went for a walk. |

| inzwischen | B1 | Ich war im Bad; inzwischen hatte meine Schwester den Tisch gedeckt. | I was in the bathroom; in the meantime my sister had set the table. |
✉️ 6) Formal Emails (Formelle E-Mails)
These frames are enough for a complete email: salutation at the top, reason for writing in the middle, a polite request, then closing and signature. Golden rule: always use Sie in formal mail — never du, unless the sender is already writing informally to you.
| Expression | Level | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, | A2 | Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, ich interessiere mich für den Deutschkurs. | Dear Sir or Madam, I am interested in the German course. |

⚠️ Common Mistakes (Typische Fehler)
- Verb position after weil and dass: the verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause. Wrong: weil ich bin müde — right: weil ich müde bin. After denn, however, normal word order stays: denn ich bin müde.
- Confusing als and wie: after a comparative use als: billiger als. After so use wie: so billig wie. The common error so teuer als must be so teuer wie.
- Meiner Meinung nach: never say Nach meiner Meinung. The frame is fixed: Meiner Meinung nach + verb second: Meiner Meinung nach ist das falsch.
- Je ..., desto ...: the verb comes directly after both parts: Je mehr man liest, desto besser spricht man. Do not place the subject before the verb here.
- Es tut mir leid vs. Entschuldigung: use Es tut mir leid when you did something wrong; use Entschuldigung when you want attention or need to pass by someone. Swapping them isn't a grammar crime but it sounds odd.
- Mixing Sie and du in email: once you start with Sehr geehrte Frau ..., continue with Ihre/Ihnen/Sie to the end and close with Mit freundlichen Grüßen — not Liebe Grüße.
- Forgetting zu after Hast du Lust: the pattern is Hast du Lust, ... zu + infinitive: Hast du Lust, schwimmen zu gehen?
📝 Summary
- Learn Redemittel by function, not alphabetically: for each situation (opinion, apology, suggestion...) a handful of frames is enough.
- Use A1/A2 forms in daily conversation and save B1 forms for writing, exams, and formal email.
- Watch verb position: after weil/dass/wenn it moves to the end; after denn/deshalb it stays in place.
- For comparison: als with comparative, wie with equality.
