📚 Core Conjunction Rules

Conjunction Meaning Example Sentence
und and Ich lerne Deutsch und ich lese ein Buch.
aber but Ich mag Kaffee, aber ich trinke keinen Tee.
oder or Willst du Tee oder Kaffee?
denn because / for (explanatory) Ich gehe nach Hause, denn es ist spät.
sondern but rather / instead (used after a negative) Ich trinke keinen Kaffee, sondern ich trinke Tee.

⚠️ Note: denn and sondern are never interchangeable. denn introduces an explanation, while sondern corrects a negative statement.

✅ Examples

  • Ich lerne Deutsch und ich lese ein Buch. (I am learning German and I am reading a book.)
  • Er ist müde, aber er arbeitet weiter. (He is tired, but he keeps working.)
  • Wir gehen ins Kino, denn der Film ist gut. (We are going to the cinema, because the film is good.)
