Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben) in German

🎯 Separable verbs are made of a prefix + a base verb. The prefix separates and goes to the end of the sentence when conjugated.

Common separable prefixes: ab-, an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, nach-, vor-, weg-, zu-, zurück-

Conjugation Pattern

aufstehen (to get up)
Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf. → I get up at 7.
Du stehst früh auf. → You get up early.
Er steht jetzt auf. → He gets up now.

einkaufen (to shop)
Ich kaufe im Supermarkt ein. → I shop at the supermarket.
Wir kaufen morgen ein. → We will shop tomorrow.

fernsehen	to watch TV	Ich sehe gern fern.
vorbereiten	to prepare	Ich bereite mich vor.
abfahren	to depart (train)	Der Zug fährt um 8 Uhr ab.
anrufen	to call (phone)	Ich rufe dich an.

⚠️ Separable vs Inseparable

Some prefixes can be either separable or inseparable depending on meaning:

Verb	Separable?	Meaning	Present
umfahren	No	to run over	Er umfährt den Hund.
umfahren	Yes	to drive around	Er fährt den Hund um.

Don't worry — these are rare. Focus on clearly separable prefixes: auf-, ein-, mit-, etc.

📌 Golden Rule

In main clauses (Hauptsatz):
Prefix → end of sentence, verb → second position

Ich rufe dich an. ✓
Ich anrufe dich. ✗ (Wrong!)

In subordinate clauses: prefix stays attached (verb goes to the end)
... weil ich dich anrufe. ✓
