Noun-Derivation Suffixes (-nis, -tum, -schaft, -ling)

🔙 Back to Grammar Index

🎯 Lesson Objectives

  • Derive nouns from verbs, nouns and adjectives using the suffixes -nis, -tum, -schaft and -ling.
  • Determine the gender of the derived noun directly from its suffix instead of memorising it separately.
  • Learn the most important gender exceptions.

📚 Core Rule

Each suffix usually determines the gender of the resulting noun — a smart way to save memorisation effort:

Suffix Gender Examples
-nis das (mostly) das Ereignis, das Ergebnis, das Geheimnis, das Erlebnis
-tum das (mostly) das Eigentum, das Christentum, das Fürstentum
-schaft die die Freundschaft, die Wissenschaft, die Mannschaft, die Nachbarschaft
-ling der der Lehrling, der Frühling, der Fremdling, der Säugling

Meaning of each suffix

  • -nis: the result of the action: erleben (to experience) → das Erlebnis (experience), geschehen (to happen) → das Geschehnis.
  • -tum: a state, group or domain: das Eigentum (property), das Fürstentum (principality).
  • -schaft: a group of people or a relationship between them: die Freundschaft (friendship), die Lehrerschaft (teaching staff), die Mannschaft (team).
  • -ling: a person connected to the verb or adjective: der Lehrling (apprentice), der Säugling (infant), der Fremdling (stranger).

⚠️ Important gender exceptions: - With -tum: stubbornly masculine: der Irrtum (error), der Reichtum (wealth). - With -nis: some words are feminine: die Erlaubnis (permission), die Erkenntnis (insight/knowledge).

Memorise these four common words as exceptions; the general rule covers all other words.
