3. 📝 Grammar: Subordinate Clauses with "dass" and "ob"

Rule for "dass" — that

The subordinate clause with dass means "that" and is used to report information or opinions.

  • Ich glaube, dass es morgen regnet. — I believe that it will rain tomorrow.
  • Ich weiß, dass der Film um 20 Uhr beginnt. — I know that the movie starts at 8 PM.
  • Er sagt, dass er die Nachrichten jeden Morgen liest. — He says that he reads the news every morning.

Rule for "ob" — whether / if

The subordinate clause with ob means "whether/if" and is used for indirect questions.

  • Ich möchte wissen, ob der Film gut ist. — I want to know whether the movie is good.
  • Weißt du, ob es heute regnet? — Do you know if it will rain today?
  • Sie fragt, ob wir ins Kino gehen. — She asks whether we are going to the cinema.

Word Order in Subordinate Clauses

In subordinate clauses, the verb goes to the end:

Main Clause dass/ob Subject Rest of Clause Verb
Ich glaube dass der Film gut ist
Ich weiß ob er morgen kommt
Er sagt dass es heute regnet

💡 Tip: The verb always goes to the end in subordinate clauses. Practice this — it's one of the most important rules in German!

When a noun is preceded by an indefinite article (ein/eine) or by keine, the adjective takes endings similar to those with the definite article — with one important exception: masculine accusative.

Nominativ und Akkusativ — Nominative and Accusative

Case masculine feminine neuter plural
Nominativ ein neuer Film eine kurze Sendung ein gutes Interview keine alten Zeitungen
Akkusativ einen neuen Film eine kurze Sendung ein gutes Interview keine alten Zeitungen

Examples — from the world of media:
