2. 📖 Reading Passage: My Digital Life

Key Vocabulary: - sich vorstellen — to imagine - die Gruppenchats — group chats - das Tablet — the tablet - die Bildschirmzeit — screen time - durchsetzen — to enforce - genießen — to enjoy

The Basic Rule

We use "als" (when / back when) to express events in the past. A subordinate clause with "als" describes a time different from the present.

Example

Als ich jung war, gab es kein Internet. — When I was young, there was no internet. Als ich in die Schule ging, hatte ich kein Smartphone. — When I went to school, I didn't have a smartphone.

Differences between "als" and "wenn"

Word Usage Example
als past event (one time) Als ich klein war, spielte ich viel draußen.
wenn general condition or future Wenn ich Zeit habe, chate ich mit Freunden.

Examples with "als"

Main Clause + Subordinate Clause with "als"
Heute nutze ich viel Technologie als ich jung war, gab es kein Internet.
Ich erinnere mich als ich mein erstes Handy bekam.
Mein Leben ist einfacher als ich lernen musste, alles handschriftlich zu machen.

💡 Tip: "als" is only used for past events. For present or future, use "wenn."

📝 Additional Grammar: Purpose Clauses with um … zu and the Double Connectors sowohl … als auch / weder … noch

1) Purpose clauses with um … zu (Infinitivsätze)

When the subject is the same in both clauses and you want to express the purpose, use um + zu + infinitive. The verb after zu stays an infinitive and is never conjugated:

German English
Ich nutze die App, um Nachrichten zu prüfen. I use the app to check messages.
Um fit zu bleiben, mache ich jeden Morgen Online-Yoga. In order to stay fit, I do online yoga every morning.
Ich lade die Datei herunter, um sie offline zu lesen. I download the file to read it offline.

⚠️ Important: If the subject differs between the two clauses, um … zu does not work — you then need damit: Ich erkläre es langsam, damit die Kinder alles verstehen.

2) Double connectors: sowohl … als auch / weder … noch (Doppelkonjunktionen)

These two patterns link two equivalent elements inside the same sentence — and the verb stays in its normal position (position 2), because they do not open a subordinate clause:

German English
Ich nutze sowohl mein Smartphone als auch meinen Laptop für die Arbeit. For work I use both my smartphone and my laptop.
Die neue App ist sowohl praktisch als auch kostenlos. The new app is both practical and free.
Weder meine Großeltern noch meine Eltern benutzen Social Media. Neither my grandparents nor my parents use social media.
Ich habe weder Zeit noch Lust, den ganzen Tag online zu sein. I have neither the time nor the desire to be online all day.

💡 Tip: sowohl … als auch affirms both elements together (a positive meaning), and weder … noch negates both together (a negative meaning) — mixing them is not allowed.

💡 Final Tip: Technology is a great tool, but don't forget to live real life — face-to-face conversations are better than digital ones!
