2. 🗣️ The Rule in the Simplest Way

Asking for Directions — Wie komme ich zu...?

In German A1, you can ask for directions in two ways:

Way 1: Wo ist...? (Where is...?)

Wo ist der Supermarkt? — Where is the supermarket? Wo ist die Post? — Where is the post office? Wo ist das Kino? — Where is the cinema?

Super easy! Same Wo you learned in Lesson 11 (location prepositions)!

Way 2: Wie komme ich zu/zur...? (How do I get to...?)

This is the more common way to ask:

Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? — How do I get to the train station? Wie komme ich zur Post? — How do I get to the post office? Wie komme ich zum Kino? — How do I get to the cinema?

🔑 The Golden Rule:

Article zu + dem = zu + der =
der (masculine) zum (zu + dem)
das (neuter) zum (zu + dem)
die (feminine) zur (zu + der)
die (plural) zu den

zum = zu + dem (masculine + neuter) zur = zu + der (feminine) zu den = zu + den (plural)

7. 🏙️ There Is / There Are: es gibt (Es gibt)

Instead of asking Wo ist die Post?, you can ask: is there a post office here? The standard way to express existence in German is es gibt:

Deutsch Pronunciation English
Gibt es hier einen Supermarkt? GEEBT es heer EYE-nen ZOO-per-markt? Is there a supermarket here?
Es gibt hier eine Apotheke. es GEEBT heer EYE-nuh ah-po-TAY-kuh There is a pharmacy here.
Gibt es hier ein Café? GEEBT es heer ine kah-FAY? Is there a café here?
Es gibt hier viele Cafés. es GEEBT heer FEE-luh kah-FAYS There are many cafés here.

⚠️ Notice: After es gibt the noun takes the Accusative: der → einen (masc.), die → eine (fem.), das → ein (neut.).

Question and Answer

Question Answer
Gibt es hier eine Post? Ja, es gibt hier eine Post. / Nein, es gibt keine Post.

💡 Golden note: es gibt stays exactly the same in every situation — it never changes for singular or plural: Es gibt einen Park. / Es gibt zwei Parks.

📘 Detailed explanation: Akkusativ

8. 🔀 Two-Way Prepositions: an, auf, in (+ Dativ) (Wechselpräpositionen)

In this lesson you used sentences with prepositions without knowing their official name! In German they are called Wechselpräpositionen (two-way prepositions) because they "switch" between two cases depending on the question:

Question Meaning Case Result
Wo? (where?) fixed location Dative dem / der
Wohin? (where to?) movement / direction Accusative den / die / das

In this lesson we need the location case (Wo? → Dative) most of all:

Deutsch Pronunciation English
Das Café ist an der Ampel. dahs kah-FAY ist ahn dare AM-pel The café is at the traffic light.
Die Post ist in der Bahnhofstraße. dee POST ist in dare BAHN-hof-shtrah-suh The post office is on Station Street.
Auf dem Markt gibt es Obst. owf dem MARKT GEEBT es ohpst At the market there is fruit.
Wir sind im Kino. (in + dem = im) veer zint im KEE-no We are at the cinema.

And you have already seen the direction case (Wohin?) too:

Deutsch English
Ich gehe in die Stadt. I'm going into the city. (movement → Accusative)
Wir gehen ins Kino. (in + das = ins) We're going to the cinema. (movement → Accusative)

💡 Golden note: Same preposition, two cases! Ask yourself: fixed or moving? Wo ist die Post? → in der Straße (Dative). Wohin gehst du? → in die Stadt (Accusative).

📘 Detailed explanation: Wechselpräpositionen

9. 🔗 Connecting Words: und, aber, oder (Konjunktionen)

To give longer, smoother directions you need words that connect sentences. The three most important connectors at A1:

Connector Meaning Use
und and adding information
aber but contrast
oder or choice
Deutsch Pronunciation English
Gehen Sie geradeaus, und dann links. GAY-en zee guh-RAH-duh-ouse, oont dahn links Go straight ahead, and then left.
Der Park ist schön, aber klein. dare PARK ist shurn, AH-bair kline The park is nice, but small.
Ist die Post links oder rechts? ist dee POST links OH-der rechts? Is the post office left or right?
Gehen wir zu Fuß oder fahren wir? GAY-en veer tsoo FOOS OH-der FAH-ren veer? Shall we walk or drive?

💡 Golden note: These connectors never change the word order — after the comma the verb returns to its normal second position: ..., aber der Bahnhof ist weit.
