Comparisons (Vergleiche) in German

🎯 Comparisons allow us to compare two or more things. In German, we use wie for equality and als for difference. Additionally, adjectives take special forms for the comparative and superlative.

💡 When do we use wie and when als?

1. wie — like / as (Equality)

We use wie when two things are equal or similar.

Er ist so groß wie ich.
He is as tall as me.

Sie singt so schön wie ihre Mutter.
She sings as beautifully as her mother.

⚠️ Note: Before wie you often find so or genauso (just as).

2. als — than (Difference)

We use als when there is a difference between the two things.

Er ist größer als ich.
He is taller than me.

Deutsch ist schwerer als Englisch.
German is more difficult than English.

⚠️ The Rule: Adjective Forms for Comparison

🟢 Positive Form (Positiv)

The basic form of the adjective: - groß — big / tall - klein — small - schnell — fast - schön — beautiful - teuer — expensive - gut — good - gern — gladly

🟢 Comparative (Komparativ)

Adjective + -er (meaning "more ... than"):

⚠️ Important notes: - Words with a, o, u often take an Umlaut (ä, ö, ü): groß → größer - Words ending in er drop the e: teuer → teurer - Words ending in el drop the e: dunkel → dunkler

🟢 Superlative (Superlativ)

Two forms:

am + adjective + -(e)sten (when not mentioning the noun):
am größten — the biggest/tallest
am schnellsten — the fastest
der/die/das + adjective + -(e)ste (when mentioning the noun):
der größte Mann — the tallest man
die schnellste Frau — the fastest woman

💡 Tip: To remember the difference between wie and als: wie = equality (so ... wie) and als = difference (...er als). Think of "als" as "else" — something else = different / more than.
