Wohnfläche(living space) in square meters (Quadratmeter / qm).
3. 📝 wenn-Sätze (Nebensätze) — "wenn" Clauses (Subordinate Clauses)
Rule: Conditional clauses with wenn
wenn means "if" or "when". It is a conjunction (Konjunktion) that sends the verb to the end of the subordinate clause.
Structure (Struktur)
| Hauptsatz (Main clause) | Nebensatz mit "wenn" (Subordinate clause with wenn) |
|---|---|
| Ich bin glücklich, | wenn ich Zeit habe. (when I have time) |
| Wir helfen gern, | wenn die Nachbarn fragen. (when the neighbors ask) |
| Er ist zufrieden, | wenn die Wohnung sauber ist. (when the apartment is clean) |
Examples (Beispiele)
| Deutsch | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Wenn ich Geld habe, reise ich gern. | If I have money, I like to travel. |
| Wenn er nach Hause kommt, kocht er. | When he comes home, he cooks. |
| Ich rufe dich an, wenn ich Hilfe brauche. | I call you when I need help. |
| Wenn das Wetter schön ist, gehen wir spazieren. | If the weather is nice, we go for a walk. |
| Die Nachbarn sind freundlich, wenn man sie grüßt. | The neighbors are friendly when you greet them. |
Word order with wenn
If the sentence starts with wenn, the conjugated verb goes to the end of the wenn clause, and the main clause starts with the verb:
| wenn-Satz am Anfang | Hauptsatz |
|---|---|
| Wenn ich Zeit habe, | gehe ich schwimmen. |
| Wenn es regnet, | bleibe ich zu Hause. |
| Wenn der Vermieter kommt, | mache ich die Tür auf. |
⚠️ Important rule: When the sentence starts with
wenn, the conjugated verb goes to the end of thewennclause. The main clause then begins with the verb directly —Wenn ... , dann ....
Comparison: wenn vs. als
| Deutsch | English meaning | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Wenn | when / if (future or repetition) | for repeated or future events |
| Als | when (past, one-time) | for one-time events in the past |
| Examples | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Wenn ich Urlaub habe, reise ich. | When I have vacation, I travel (recurring habit). |
| Als ich Kind war, wohnte ich in Köln. | When I was a child, I lived in Cologne (one-time past event). |
4. 💬 Dialog: "Wohnen und Nachbarn" — Housing and Neighbors
Characters: Frau Schmidt (landlady) and Ali (tenant, new in the apartment)
| Deutsch | English meaning |
|---|---|
| Frau Schmidt: Guten Tag, Herr Ali! Wie gefällt Ihnen die Wohnung? | Good day, Mr. Ali! How do you like the apartment? |
| Ali: Guten Tag, Frau Schmidt! Die Wohnung ist sehr schön und gemütlich. | Good day, Mrs. Schmidt! The apartment is very nice and cozy. |
| Frau Schmidt: Das freut mich. Sind die Nachbarn freundlich? | I'm glad to hear that. Are the neighbors friendly? |
| Ali: Ja, sehr. Herr Müller von nebenan hat mir gestern geholfen. | Yes, very. Mr. Müller next door helped me yesterday. |
| Frau Schmidt: Das ist schön. Wenn Sie Probleme haben, rufen Sie mich an. | That's nice. If you have problems, call me. |
| Ali: Vielen Dank. Eine Frage: Wann ist die Miete fällig? | Thank you very much. One question: When is the rent due? |
| Frau Schmidt: Die Miete ist immer am ersten des Monats fällig. | The rent is always due on the first of the month. |
| Ali: Verstanden. Und wenn ich etwas reparieren muss? | Understood. And if I need to repair something? |
| Frau Schmidt: Dann sagen Sie mir Bescheid. Ich kümmere mich darum. | Then let me know. I'll take care of it. |

6. 🧩 Position and Direction Verbs: stellen · stehen · legen · liegen · hängen · stecken
When furnishing your new apartment you will constantly use six verbs that work in opposite pairs: one verb for movement (a change of place) and one for position (a fixed state).
The idea: wohin? or wo?
| Movement (wohin? + Akkusativ) | Position (wo? + Dativ) |
|---|---|
| stellen — to put something upright | stehen — to be standing |
| legen — to lay something down | liegen — to be lying |
| hängen — to hang something up | hängen — to be hanging |
| stecken — to stick something into a place | stecken — to be stuck inside |
The pairs, sentence by sentence, from the world of housing:
| Movement (wohin?) | Position (wo?) |
|---|---|
| Ich stelle den Stuhl in die Ecke. (I put the chair in the corner) | Der Stuhl steht in der Ecke. (The chair is in the corner) |
| Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch. (I put the book on the table) | Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (The book is on the table) |
| Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. (I hang the picture on the wall) | Das Bild hängt an der Wand. (The picture is hanging on the wall) |
| Ich stecke den Schlüssel in die Tasche. (I put the key in my pocket) | Der Schlüssel steckt in der Tasche. (The key is in the pocket) |
Two notes: - hängen and stecken appear twice in exactly the same form — once as transitive verbs (taking a direct object: Akkusativ) and once as intransitive (a fixed state). You tell them apart from context and from the question: wohin? or wo? - With movement verbs the two-way preposition takes the Akkusativ case (in die Ecke), with fixed position the Dativ (in der Ecke) — the same rule you will learn in detail in the lesson on two-way prepositions.
💡 Golden rule: Before choosing the preposition's case, ask yourself: does the verb describe movement (wohin?) or a fixed position (wo?)? Movement ← Akkusativ, position ← Dativ. This avoids the most common mistake in this area.
