💡 Why Use Passive Substitutes?

Reason Example
The doer is unimportant or unknown Hier spricht man Deutsch. (German is spoken here.)
Avoid the repetitive use of werden Die Tür lässt sich öffnen. (better than die Tür wird geöffnet)
Express possibility or obligation more softly Das ist zu machen. (possible / has to be done)

The three main substitutes are:

  1. man + verb (the indefinite pronoun)
  2. sich lassen + Infinitiv (to express possibility)
  3. sein + zu + Infinitiv (to express obligation or possibility)

⚠️ Substitute 1: man + verb

Rule:

man + present-tense verb — equivalent to a Passiv with no specific subject.

Passiv man-Form
Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen. Hier spricht man Deutsch.
The lights are turned off at ten. Man schaltet das Licht um zehn aus.

Examples: - Man darf hier nicht parken. — Parking is not allowed here. - Man muss die Hausaufgaben machen. — You have to do the homework. - Man kann die Lösung leicht finden. — The solution can be found easily.

📌 Note: In man + verb, the verb is always in the er/sie/es form (third person singular), but the meaning is general.

⚠️ Substitute 2: sich lassen + Infinitiv

Rule:

sich + lassen (conjugated) + Infinitiv — the result is the meaning "it is possible / can be done" (the process is possible to achieve).

This substitute expresses possibility and corresponds to können + Passiv.

Passiv mit können sich lassen
Die Tür kann geöffnet werden. Die Tür lässt sich öffnen.
Das Problem kann gelöst werden. Das Problem lässt sich lösen.

Examples: - Das Fenster lässt sich öffnen. — The window can be opened. - Der Text lässt sich leicht lesen. — The text is easy to read. - Diese Aufgabe lässt sich nicht lösen. — This task cannot be solved. - Das lässt sich machen! — That's doable!

📌 Note: sich lassen conjugates with the subject: ich lasse mich, du lässt dich, er lässt sich.

⚠️ Substitute 3: sein + zu + Infinitiv

Rule:

sein (conjugated) + zu + Infinitiv — expresses obligation (= müssen) or possibility (= können).

Meaning sein + zu
Obligation: must / should Das ist zu beachten. (= muss beachtet werden)
Possibility: can Der Test ist zu schaffen. (= kann geschafft werden)

Examples: - Diese Regeln sind zu beachten. — These rules must be observed. - Der Brief ist sofort zu schreiben. — The letter must be written immediately. - Das Problem ist zu lösen. — The problem must/can be solved. - Nichts ist zu befürchten. — There is nothing to fear.
