6. 📝 Grammar: Relative Clauses (Relativsätze — Nominativ & Akkusativ)
Basic Rule
A relative clause (Relativsatz) is a subordinate clause that describes the noun before it and follows it directly. It begins with a relative pronoun that matches the gender and number of that noun; its case depends on the role it plays inside the relative clause. The verb always goes to the end of the clause.
Relative Pronouns
| Kasus | masculine | feminine | neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ (subject) | der | die | das | die |
| Akkusativ (direct object) | den | die | das | die |
Examples — Nominativ (the pronoun is the subject of the relative clause)
- Das ist der Kollege, der selbstständig arbeitet. — This is the colleague who works independently.
- Das ist die Präsentation, die morgen beginnt. — This is the presentation that starts tomorrow.
- Das ist das Projekt, das gut läuft. — This is the project that is going well.
- Das sind die Aufgaben, die wir heute erledigen. — These are the tasks that we are completing today.
Examples — Akkusativ (the pronoun is the direct object of the relative clause)
- Der Kollege, den ich anrufe, ist im Termin. — The colleague whom I am calling is in a meeting.
- Die Präsentation, die sie vorbereitet, ist fertig. — The presentation that she is preparing is ready.
- Das Projekt, das wir besprechen, ist neu. — The project that we are discussing is new.
- Die Recherche, die er macht, ist gründlich. — The research that he is doing is thorough.
💡 Golden tip: Ask yourself: what is the role of the relative pronoun inside the relative clause? Subject → Nominativ (der/die/das). Direct object → Akkusativ (den/die/das). The only visible change is masculine: der → den.
