💡 What Are Adverbs of Place?

Adverbs of place (Lokale Adverbien) tell us where something happens. They do not change with grammatical cases — unlike prepositions!

Adverb Meaning Example
oben above / upstairs Das Bild hängt oben.
unten below / downstairs Der Keller ist unten.
links on the left Das Museum ist links.
rechts on the right Die Bank ist rechts.
vorn(e) in front Ich sitze vorn.
hinten in the back Er steht hinten.
drinnen inside Wir sind drinnen.
draußen outside Die Kinder spielen draußen.
hier here Hier bin ich.
da there / here Das Buch ist da.
dort there (further) Das Hotel ist dort.
überall everywhere Es gibt überall Blumen.
nirgendwo nowhere Ich finde es nirgendwo.
irgendwo somewhere Es liegt irgendwo hier.
gegenüber opposite Das Café ist gegenüber.

🗺️ Difference Between Wo? / Wohin? / Woher?

Adverbs of place take different forms depending on the question:

oben (above) nach oben (upwards) von oben (from above)
unten (below) nach unten (downwards) von unten (from below)
links (on the left) nach links (to the left) von links (from the left)
rechts (on the right) nach rechts (to the right) von rechts (from the right)
vorn (in front) nach vorn (forward) von vorn (from the front)
hinten (in back) nach hinten (backward) von hinten (from the back)
drinnen (inside) nach drinnen (insidewards) von drinnen (from inside)
draußen (outside) nach draußen (outwards) von draußen (from outside)
hier (here) hierher (to here) hierher (from here)
da (there) dorthin (to there) daher (from there)
dort (there) dorthin (to there) dorther (from there)

⚠️ Adverb vs. Preposition

Adverb Preposition
oben — above (no noun) auf dem Tisch — on the table (with noun)
Ich wohne oben. Ich wohne im zweiten Stock.
No case change Changes the noun after it (Dativ/Akkusativ)

  • Die U-Bahn ist unten. — The subway is downstairs.
