Relative Clauses with Prepositions (Relativsätze mit Präpositionen) in German

🎯 Relativsätze mit Präpositionen (relative clauses with prepositions) are used to connect two sentences about a person or thing that appears in the sentence with a preposition (like mit, für, über, auf, von…). The preposition stays in place, and the relative pronoun is declined according to its case after the preposition.

💡 Basic Structure

First sentence Second sentence Combined
Das ist der Mann. Ich spreche mit dem Mann. Das ist der Mann, mit dem ich spreche.
This is the man. I am speaking with the man. This is the man I am speaking with.

📌 Rule: The preposition stays next to the verb, and the noun after the preposition is replaced by the relative pronoun in the correct case.

⚠️ Declining the Relative Pronoun after Prepositions

The relative pronoun der / die / das / die changes according to the case (Kasus) that the preposition requires.

The Dative case (after prepositions like mit, von, bei, zu, aus, nach, seit):

Relative pronoun With a Dative preposition Gender
der mit dem masculine
die mit der feminine
das mit dem neuter
die (plural) mit denen plural

Examples: - Das ist der Freund, mit dem ich gehe. — This is the friend I am going with. - Das ist die Kollegin, von der ich dir erzählt habe. — This is the colleague I told you about. - Das ist das Buch, über das wir gesprochen haben. — This is the book we talked about. - Das sind die Kinder, mit denen ich spiele. — These are the children I play with.

The Accusative case (after prepositions like für, ohne, durch, um, gegen):

Relative pronoun With an Accusative preposition Gender
der für den masculine
die für die feminine
das für das neuter
die (plural) für die plural

Examples: - Der Stuhl, auf den ich sitze, ist neu. — The chair I'm sitting on is new. - Die Frau, für die ich das Geschenk kaufte, feiert heute. — The woman I bought the gift for is celebrating today. - Das Auto, um das er sich kümmert, gehört ihm. — The car he takes care of belongs to him.

To find the case: ask yourself — "where/to whom?" (location = Dativ, direction/what = Akkusativ). Same logic as Wechselpräpositionen.

⚠️ The wo- Compounds and Combined Forms

With local prepositions (auf, in, an, unter, über, neben, vor, hinter, zwischen), the combination with an indefinite object usually becomes a wo- compound:

Common compound Meaning
worüber / woran about what / on what
womit / wobei with what
wofür for what

Examples: - Das Problem, worüber wir diskutierten, ist gelöst. — The problem we discussed has been solved. - Der Kurs, wofür ich mich anmelden will, beginnt bald. — The course I want to sign up for starts soon.

📌 Note: For things we use wo- compounds (worüber), while for people we use preposition + pronoun (like von der).

⚠️ Difference between der/die/das and wo- Compounds

Use Example
For people: preposition + relative pronoun die Frau, mit der ich spreche
For things: wo- compound das Buch, worüber wir sprechen
