📚 Core Rule

Here brauchen works like a semi-modal verb: it is followed by an infinitive preceded by zu.

nur + brauchen + zu + Infinitiv	only needs to	Du brauchst nur den Knopf zu drücken.
brauchen + noun (regular verb)	needs something	Ich brauche deine Hilfe.

⚠️ Note: The most common uses are the negation (nicht brauchen) and the pattern nur/bloß + brauchen. A bare infinitive without zu is not correct here.

1) Negation: nicht brauchen ... zu + Infinitive

This structure means "doesn't need to / doesn't have to":

Du brauchst heute nicht früh aufzustehen. — You don't have to get up early today.
Sie braucht die Rechnung nicht zu bezahlen. — She doesn't need to pay the invoice.
Wir brauchen keine Fahrkarte zu kaufen. — We don't need to buy a ticket.

With a noun we use kein (as in the last sentence); with an infinitive we use nicht.

2) Comparison with müssen

The two structures are almost equivalent in meaning, but nicht brauchen zu sounds lighter and friendlier: "no need to".

Ihr müsst nicht warten.	Ihr braucht nicht zu warten.
Du musst das nicht machen.	Du brauchst das nicht zu machen.

3) nur / bloß + brauchen

To express "you only need to...":

Du brauchst nur den Chef anzurufen. — You only need to call the boss.
Wir brauchen bloß zu unterschreiben. — We only need to sign.

4) In subordinate clauses (Nebensatz)

Brauchen moves to the end of the clause, and zu stays attached before the infinitive:

Es ist schön, weil du nicht zu warten brauchst. — It's nice because you don't need to wait.
Ich freue mich, dass ihr nicht mitzukommen braucht. — I'm glad you don't have to come along.
