2. 📖 Reading Passage

Important vocabulary from the text: - sich freiwillig engagieren — to get involved voluntarily - Lebensmittel sortieren — to sort food items - Erfahrung sammeln — to gain experience - dankbar sein — to be grateful - Hilfe in der Gemeinschaft — help in the community - Verantwortung übernehmen — to take responsibility

Infinitive with "zu" — Infinitiv mit "zu"

In German, we use "zu" with infinitives to express plans, intentions, or conditional actions.

Formation rules:

Case Rule Example
Simple verb zu + Infinitiv zu helfen (to help)
Separable verb zu between prefix and verb anzufangen (to begin)
Inseparable verb zu before the verb zu verstehen (to understand)

Examples:

German English
Ich möchte mich freiwillig engagieren. I'd like to get involved voluntarily.
Er plant, in einer Tafel zu helfen. He plans to help at a food bank.
Sie versucht, neue Menschen kennenzulernen. She's trying to meet new people.
Wir haben beschlossen, ein Sozialprojekt zu starten. We decided to start a social project.
Es ist wichtig, sich in der Gemeinschaft zu beteiligen. It's important to participate in the community.

💡 Tip: Separable verbs drop the prefix and move it to the end: - anfangen → anzufangen - aufhören → aufzuhören - anrufen → anzurufen

📝 Additional Grammar — Words Ending in ‑los and Relative Pronouns in the Dative

1) Words ending in ‑los (without …)

Adding ‑los to a noun creates an adjective meaning "free of / without":

Noun Adjective with ‑los Meaning
die Arbeit arbeitslos unemployed
die Hilfe hilflos helpless
der Sinn sinnlos pointless / meaningless
die Chance chancenlos without a chance
der Mut mutlos discouraged / lacking courage

Examples in a volunteering context:

German English
Nach dem Umzug fühlte er sich allein und hilflos — dann half ihm ein Verein. After moving, he felt alone and helpless — then a club helped him.
Viele Menschen wurden arbeitslos und brauchten Unterstützung. Many people lost their jobs and needed support.
Ehrenamt ist unbezahlt, aber keineswegs sinnlos. Voluntary work is unpaid, but by no means pointless.

💡 Golden tip: Many ‑los adjectives have an opposite ending in ‑voll: sinnlos ↔ sinnvoll, wertlos ↔ wertvoll.

2) Relative pronouns in the Dative (dem / der / denen)

If the reference noun functions as an indirect object inside the relative clause (or follows a preposition that takes the Dative), the relative pronoun takes the Dative form:

Reference noun Nominative Dative
der Verein (masculine singular) der dem
die Frau (feminine singular) die der
das Kind (neuter singular) das dem
die Leute (plural) die denen

Examples:

German English
Die Leute, denen wir helfen, sind sehr dankbar. The people we help are very grateful.
Die Frau, der die Tafel hilft, wohnt allein. The woman whom the food bank helps lives alone.
Der Verein, dem Mitglieder fehlen, sucht Freiwillige. The club that lacks members is looking for volunteers.
Das Pflegeheim, in dem wir arbeiten, braucht mehr Helfer. The care home where we work needs more helpers.

💡 Tip: The case of the pronoun is determined by its role inside its own clause: a verb that requires the Dative (helfen, danken, fehlen) or a preposition such as in / mit / nach.
