Conditional Clauses (Konditionalsätze) in German

🎯 Konditionalsätze (conditional clauses) express a condition and its result: "if X happens, then Y happens." They are introduced by the conjunctions wenn (= if) or falls (= in case). In German we distinguish between a real condition (Indikativ) and an unreal condition (Konjunktiv II).

📌 Golden rule: The conditional clause (starting with wenn/falls) is a subordinate clause whose conjugated verb stands at the very end.

⚠️ Core Rule — Word Order

Basic rule (when the conditional clause comes first):

If the sentence begins with the conditional clause, the conjugated main verb starts the main clause.

Wenn + subordinate clause (verb at the end), + main verb in position 2

Example: - Wenn ich Zeit habe, lerne ich Deutsch. - If I have time, I study German.

📌 Note: The main clause begins with the verb here because the conditional clause has "occupied" position 1 — the exact logic you know from "Gestern habe ich gelernt".

⚠️ Real and Unreal Conditions

✅ Real condition (erfüllbar — fulfils) — uses the Indikativ:

The condition is possible or real; the verb is conjugated in the present (or any real tense).

Sentence	Translation
Wenn es sonnig ist, gehen wir spazieren.	If it is sunny, we go for a walk.
Falls du Hunger hast, gibt es Brot.	In case you are hungry, there is bread.

⚠️ Unreal condition (irrealis) — uses the Konjunktiv II:

The condition is not possible or purely imaginary; we use Konjunktiv II for the meaning "if only / would".

Wenn ich Zeit hätte, käme ich.	If I had time, I would come. (but I don't)
Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich eine Villa kaufen.	If I had more money, I would buy a villa.

📌 Note: In unreal conditions we often use würde + Infinitiv instead of the Konjunktiv II of weak verbs, while we keep the important irregular ones by heart (wäre, hätte, käme).

⚠️ falls or wenn?

Comparison example: - Wenn du kommst, freue ich mich. — If you come, I am glad. (assumes coming) - Falls du kommst, freue ich mich. — In case you come, I am glad. (assumes NOT coming)

📌 Note: Sometimes the two meanings coincide and falls and wenn are interchangeable with little difference, but we use falls mainly for rare or uncertain cases.

In formal and literary speech the conjunction wenn can be dropped by inverting the order (V2): Hätte ich Zeit, käme ich. (If I had time, I would come.)

💡 Quick B1 exam tip: Notice the crucial difference between "Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich" (real) and "Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen" (unreal). In speaking and writing, use würde + Infinitiv for unreal conditions with regular verbs to avoid mistakes.
