🎬 Lesson Video

1. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Members (Die Familie)

Let's learn the names of family members first. Imagine a big family picture in your head!

German Pronunciation English
die Familie dee fah-MEE-lee-eh the family
der Vater deer FAH-ter the father / dad
die Mutter dee MOO-ter the mother / mom
der Bruder deer BROO-der the brother
die Schwester dee SHVES-ter the sister
der Sohn deer Zohn the son
die Tochter dee TOKH-ter the daughter
der Opa deer OH-pah the grandpa
die Oma dee OH-mah the grandma
der Onkel deer ON-kel the uncle
die Tante dee TAHN-teh the aunt
der Cousin deer koo-ZAHN the (male) cousin
die Cousine dee koo-ZEE-neh the (female) cousin
der Großvater deer GROHS-fah-ter the grandfather (formal)
die Großmutter dee GROHS-moo-ter the grandmother (formal)
das Baby dahs BAY-bee the baby
das Kind dahs kind the child

🧠 Important note: Every German noun has an article (der / die / das). Always learn the word WITH its article!
der = masculine (male) — die = feminine (female) — das = neutral (no clear gender)

2. 🧸 Possessive Articles — Like You're 5 Years Old!

Let's play a game. You have a toy (ball, car). How do you say "this is my toy"? Or "this is your toy"?

In German, we use small words before the noun to say "who owns this thing." We call these possessive articles.

✨ The Magic Trick — Every Person Has Their Own Word!

Each pronoun has a special possessive word. Look:

Pronoun Meaning Possessive Word Like saying
ich I mein my
du you (friend) dein your
er he sein his
sie she ihr her
es it sein its
wir we unser our
ihr you guys euer your (plural)
sie they ihr their
Sie you (formal) Ihr your (formal)

🎈 Easy reminder: The possessive word matches the OWNER!
mein = I (ich) → my
dein = you (du) → your
sein = he (er) → his
ihr = she (sie) → her
unser = we (wir) → our
euer = you guys (ihr) → your (pl.)
ihr = they (sie) → their
Ihr = you formal (Sie) → your (formal)

🎭 Rule 1 — Change the Possessive Word by the OWNER

Just change the possessive word based on who owns it:

Ich habe einen Bruder. → Mein Bruder heißt Ali.
(I have a brother. → My brother is called Ali.)

Du hast eine Schwester. → Deine Schwester heißt Lina.
(You have a sister. → Your sister is called Lina.)

Er hat einen Hund. → Sein Hund ist süß!
(He has a dog. → His dog is cute!)

🎭 Rule 2 — The Possessive Word Changes Based on the NOUN (masc / fem / neuter / plural)

This is the most important part. Let's play the game "mein or meine?"

Check out this magic table:

Gender of Noun With ich With du With er
🟦 Masculine (der) mein Bruder dein Bruder sein Bruder
🟥 Feminine (die) meine Schwester deine Schwester seine Schwester
🟩 Neuter (das) mein Kind dein Kind sein Kind
🟨 Plural (die) meine Kinder deine Kinder seine Kinder

🎯 The rule in one sentence:
mein / dein / sein → for masculine and neuter nouns (der / das)
meine / deine / seine → for feminine and plural nouns (die + plural)

Just add a little -e at the end! meine = feminine and plural. mein = masculine and neuter.

The Complete Possessive Articles Table 🏆

Owner 👦 Masculine (der) 👧 Feminine (die) 🧸 Neuter (das) 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 Plural (die Pl.)
ichmein mein Bruder meine Mutter mein Kind meine Kinder
dudein dein Bruder deine Mutter dein Kind deine Kinder
ersein sein Bruder seine Mutter sein Kind seine Kinder
sieihr ihr Bruder ihre Mutter ihr Kind ihre Kinder
essein sein Bruder seine Mutter sein Kind seine Kinder
wirunser unser Bruder unsere Mutter unser Kind unsere Kinder
ihreuer euer Bruder eure Mutter euer Kind eure Kinder
sieihr ihr Bruder ihre Mutter ihr Kind ihre Kinder
SieIhr Ihr Bruder Ihre Mutter Ihr Kind Ihre Kinder

💡 Note: With euer (your - plural informal), when adding -e it becomes eure (drop the second -e).
So: euer → eure (NOT euere!)
