Diminutives (-chen, -lein)
🎯 Lesson Objectives
- Form diminutive nouns with the suffixes -chen and -lein to express smallness or affection.
- The golden rule: the diminutive noun is ALWAYS neuter (das), no matter what gender the original noun has.
- Know when the umlaut appears and when it does not, and how the diminutive forms its plural.
📚 Core Rule
Add -chen or -lein to a noun and you get a diminutive meaning "small / cute":
| Base word | Its original gender | Diminutive | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| der Mann | masculine | das Männchen | the little man |
| die Frau | feminine | das Frauchen | the little woman |
| das Haus | neuter | das Häuschen | the little house |
| die Lampe | feminine | das Lämpchen | the little lamp |
| das Buch | neuter | das Büchlein | the little book |
⭐ The golden rule: no matter what gender the original noun has (masculine, feminine or neuter), the diminutive is ALWAYS neuter: das! Even die Frau becomes das Fräulein.
The umlaut
The umlaut appears very often with the vowels a / o / u but is not obligatory:
- With umlaut: Mann → Männchen, Baum → Bäumchen, Hund → Hündchen, Buch → Büchlein
- Without umlaut: Fisch → Fischchen, Tisch → Tischchen, Kleid → Kleidchen
Plural and style
- The plural of a diminutive = the same form as the singular: das Mädchen → die Mädchen (no ending is added).
- The suffix -chen is the common one in everyday speech, while -lein is more literary and southern, and appears a lot in fairy tales and songs: Häuslein, Schwesterlein.
💡 Very common words that entered the language through diminution: das Mädchen (girl), das Fräulein (miss — old-fashioned), das Brötchen (bread roll).
