🎯 Lesson Goals

  • Identify the main German tenses and when to use each.
  • Link each tense to a typical time reference (now, past, future).
  • Practice forming sentences in every tense.

📚 Core rules

Tense Typical time reference Example sentence
Präsens (Present) actions happening now or habitual actions Ich lese das Buch. — I am reading the book.
Perfekt (Present perfect) completed actions in the recent past (have/has) Ich habe das Buch gelesen. — I have read the book.
Präteritum (Simple past) narrative past, written language, or simple statements Er ging zur Schule. — He went to school.
Futur I (Future I) future intention or prediction using werden + infinitive Ich werde einen Brief schreiben. — I will write a letter.
Futur II (Future perfect) action that will be completed before another future point Ich werde die Arbeit beendet haben. — I will have finished the work.

Usage notes

  • Präsens can also refer to the near future when a time expression is added (e.g., Morgen gehe ich...).
  • Perfekt is the most common past tense in spoken German; Präteritum is used mainly in writing and for modal verbs.
  • Futur I is often replaced by Präsens with a future adverb, but it is useful for clear future reference.
  • Futur II is rare in daily speech; it shows that something will be finished before another future event.
