⚠️ Note: Entschuldigung is used to politely start a question. You might also hear Verzeihung, but Entschuldigung is more common.
3. 📝 Präteritum der Modalverben — Simple Past of Modal Verbs
In German, modal verbs use Präteritum for the past tense more often than Perfekt — especially in written and formal language.
Conjugation of Modalverben im Präteritum
| Verb | ich | du | er/sie/es | wir | ihr | sie/Sie |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wollen (want) | wollte | wolltest | wollte | wollten | wolltet | wollten |
| können (can) | konnte | konntest | konnte | konnten | konntet | konnten |
| müssen (must) | musste | musstest | musste | mussten | musstet | mussten |
| dürfen (may) | durfte | durftest | durfte | durften | durftet | durften |
| sollen (should) | sollte | solltest | sollte | sollten | solltet | sollten |
| mögen (like) | mochte | mochtest | mochte | mochten | mochtet | mochten |
Examples
| Deutsch | English |
|---|---|
| Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen. | I could not come yesterday. |
| Er musste früh aufstehen. | He had to get up early. |
| Wir wollten ins Kino gehen. | We wanted to go to the cinema. |
| Sie durfte nicht rauchen. | She was not allowed to smoke. |
| Ich sollte meine Hausaufgaben machen. | I was supposed to do my homework. |
| Sie mochte das Essen nicht. | She did not like the food. |
Comparison: Präsens vs. Präteritum
| Präsens | Präteritum | Meaning in Präteritum |
|---|---|---|
| Ich kann | Ich konnte | I could / I was able to |
| Er muss | Er musste | He had to |
| Wir wollen | Wir wollten | We wanted to |
| Ihr dürft | Ihr durftet | You were allowed to |
| Du sollst | Du solltest | You were supposed to |
💡 Tip: In everyday conversation, Germans use Perfekt for most verbs in the past. But with modal verbs — they almost always use Präteritum! Even in colloquial speech: "Ich konnte nicht." instead of "Ich habe nicht gekonnt."
4. 💬 Dialogue: Asking for Directions
Characters: Maria (tourist) and a friendly man
| Person | Deutsch | English |
|---|---|---|
| Maria | Entschuldigung, wie komme ich zum Museum? | Excuse me, how do I get to the museum? |
| Man | Das Museum ist nicht weit von hier. Gehen Sie geradeaus bis zur Ampel. | The museum is not far from here. Go straight ahead to the traffic light. |
| Maria | Und dann? | And then? |
| Man | Dann biegen Sie links ab. Das Museum ist hinter der Kirche. | Then turn left. The museum is behind the church. |
| Maria | Kann ich zu Fuß gehen? | Can I walk? |
| Man | Ja, es sind nur zehn Minuten. | Yes, it's only ten minutes. |
| Maria | Gestern wollte ich mit dem Bus fahren, aber ich konnte die Haltestelle nicht finden. | Yesterday I wanted to take the bus, but I couldn't find the stop. |
| Man | Ach so! Die Bushaltestelle ist um die Ecke. Sehen Sie? Dort. | I see! The bus stop is around the corner. See? There. |
| Maria | Vielen Dank! Und wie komme ich zum Hauptbahnhof? | Thank you very much! And how do I get to the main station? |
| Man | Nehmen Sie die U-Bahn. Sie müssen nur zwei Stationen fahren. | Take the subway. You only need to go two stops. |
| Maria | Super, danke! | Great, thanks! |

6. 📝 Präpositionen für Wege — Prepositions for City Routes
To describe a route through the city precisely, you need these four prepositions:
| Preposition | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| an … vorbei | past / by | Gehen Sie an der Kirche vorbei. (Walk past the church.) |
| gegenüber von | opposite | Das Museum ist gegenüber vom Park. (The museum is opposite the park.) |
| durch | through | Gehen Sie durch den Park. (Go through the park.) |
| über | across / over | Fahren Sie über die Brücke. (Drive across the bridge.) |
⚠️ Note: durch and über take the accusative with a noun (durch den Park, über die Brücke), while an … vorbei and gegenüber von take the dative (an der Kirche, gegenüber vom Park).
A complete route description:
| Deutsch | English |
|---|---|
| Gehen Sie geradeaus, dann an der Ampel vorbei. | Go straight ahead, then past the traffic light. |
| Das Kino ist gegenüber vom Bahnhof. | The cinema is opposite the station. |
| Dann gehen Sie durch die Innenstadt. | Then go through the city centre. |
| Am Ende gehen Sie über die Brücke. | At the end, cross the bridge. |
7. 📝 Indirekte Fragen mit „ob" — Indirect Questions with "ob"
When we turn a yes/no question into an indirect question, we need the word ob (whether/if). The verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause as always:
| Direct Question | Indirect Question |
|---|---|
| Kommt die U-Bahn bald? | Ich weiß nicht, ob die U-Bahn bald kommt. |
| Ist das Museum weit? | Können Sie mir sagen, ob das Museum weit ist? |
| Fährt hier der Bus zur Kirche? | Weißt du, ob hier der Bus zur Kirche fährt? |
💡 Tip: The difference is simple: if a question starts with a question word (wo, wann, wie …), that word starts the subordinate clause directly; for yes/no questions we use ob. You can find a detailed explanation of dass and ob together in Lesson 11.
