📚 Core Rules

Conjunction Typical Meaning Example with Subordinate Clause
wenn if / whenever (future or repeated) Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. (If it rains, we stay at home.)
als when (single past event) Als ich ein Kind war, spielte ich im Park. (When I was a child, I played in the park.)
während while (simultaneous actions) Er liest ein Buch, während sie kocht. (He reads a book while she cooks.)
bevor before (action that precedes another) Bevor ich fahre, trinke ich Kaffee. (Before I drive, I drink coffee.)

⚠️ Note: The verb in the Nebensatz always goes to the end of that clause.

✅ Examples

  • Wenn ich nach Berlin komme, besuche ich das Museum. (When I come to Berlin, I visit the museum.)
  • Als er ankam, war die Party bereits im Gange. (When he arrived, the party was already in progress.)
  • Sie hört Musik, während er Hausaufgaben macht. (She listens to music while he does homework.)
  • Bevor wir essen, waschen wir die Hände. (Before we eat, we wash our hands.)
