ohne … zu / (an)statt … zu — "Without" and "Instead of" with the Infinitive

🔙 Back to Grammar Index

🎯 Lesson Objectives

  • Use ohne … zu for something expected that did not happen.
  • Use (an)statt … zu for the alternative that was not taken.
  • Place zu correctly with regular and separable verbs.
  • Know the obligatory alternatives ohne dass / (an)statt dass when the subjects differ.

📚 Core Rule

Construction Meaning Example
ohne … zu + Infinitiv without (an expected event missing) Er ging, ohne ein Wort zu sagen.
(an)statt … zu + Infinitiv instead of (the alternative not taken) Statt zu lernen, spielte er.

📌 Three obligatory rules:

  1. Same subject: the two verbs (in main and subordinate clause) share one subject. If the subjects differ → use ohne dass / (an)statt dass with a full clause.
  2. Infinitive at the end: the zu + Infinitiv part stands at the end of the subordinate clause, preceded by a comma.
  3. Separable verbs: zu is inserted between prefix and stem: anzurufen, einzukaufen, aufzustehen, anzuhalten.

✅ Examples

  • Sie verließ das Haus, ohne ein Wort zu sagen. — She left the house without saying a word.
  • Statt zu warten, nahm sie ein Taxi. — Instead of waiting, she took a taxi.
  • Er fuhr weiter, ohne anzuhalten. (anhalten → anzuhalten) — He kept driving without stopping.
  • Anstatt einzukaufen, kochten wir selbst. — Instead of shopping, we cooked ourselves.
  • Statt Tee trinkt er Kaffee. (statt + noun directly also works) — Instead of tea he drinks coffee.
  • Er ging, ohne dass jemand ihn sah. (two different subjects → dass) — He left without anyone seeing him.

⚠️ Important difference from the bare-infinitive page: modal verbs (können, müssen...) take an infinitive without zu; after ohne/statt the infinitive always takes zu — no exceptions.
