⚠️ Note: "der Koffer" (suitcase) is masculine, but "das Gepäck" (luggage) is neuter and always singular!

3. 📝 Grammar: Demonstrative Pronouns (dieser, diese, dieses)

The Rule

The demonstrative pronouns dieser, diese, dieses mean "this / these" and are used to point to a specific thing.

Examples

Nominative (Subject)

  • Dieser Wagen ist sehr schnell. — This car is very fast.
  • Diese Reise war wunderschön. — This trip was wonderful.
  • Dieses Auto gehört mir. — This car belongs to me.

Accusative (Direct Object)

  • Ich kaufe diesen Wagen. — I am buying this car.
  • Ich buche diese Reise. — I am booking this trip.
  • Ich nehme dieses Navi mit. — I am taking this GPS with me.

Dative (Indirect Object)

  • Mit diesem Auto fahren wir nach Berlin. — With this car we drive to Berlin.
  • In dieser Stadt gibt es viele Sehenswürdigkeiten. — In this city there are many sights.
  • Von diesem Hotel aus ist es nicht weit. — From this hotel it's not far.

💡 Tip: The conjugation of "dieser" is similar to the definite article "der" — just add "dies-" before the ending!

Maria: Endlich Urlaub! Ich möchte mit dem Auto nach Österreich fahren. — Finally vacation! I want to travel by car to Austria.

Paul: Gute Idee! Welche Strecke nimmst du? — Good idea! Which route are you taking?

Maria: Ich fahre über die Autobahn. Diese Strecke ist am schnellsten. — I'll take the highway. This route is the fastest.

Paul: Aber Achtung! Auf dieser Autobahn gibt es oft Stau. — But careful! On this highway there is often traffic.

Maria: Hmm, dann nehme ich die Landstraße. Diese Route ist schöner. — Hmm, then I'll take the country road. This route is nicer.

Paul: Bist du mit diesem Auto schon lange gefahren? — Have you driven this car a long distance before?

Maria: Ja, dieses Auto ist zuverlässig. Ich muss nur noch tanken. — Yes, this car is reliable. I just need to refuel.

Paul: Gut. Und hast du schon eine Unterkunft gebucht? — Good. And have you already booked accommodation?

Maria: Ja, ich habe dieses Hotel in Salzburg reserviert. Es ist toll! — Yes, I reserved this hotel in Salzburg. It's great!

💡 Final Tip: Learning car vocabulary is very important if you plan to drive in Germany — the roads there are excellent!
