2. 📖 Reading Passage

In recent years, life in Germany has changed significantly. Digitalization has influenced many areas, from work to everyday life. Many people must adapt to new technologies and change their habits.

Lena has been working as a teacher for ten years. Five years ago, she started using a tablet for teaching. At first, it was a great challenge for her. She had to get used to it because she had previously only worked with chalk and a blackboard.

Today, she cannot imagine working without digitalization. She says: "You can teach better by using digital media." The experiences she has made have helped her become a better teacher.

The transformation in society offers many opportunities. Those who change and learn new things have more possibilities in life. But it is also important not to forget old values.

Key vocabulary: - beeinflusst = influenced - sich vorstellen = to imagine - umgewöhnen = to get used to new - bieten = to offer/provide

Subordinate Clauses with "indem"

We use indem to express the way in which something happens (manner/Sammelart):

Structure Meaning Example
Main clause, indem + subordinate clause by doing... Man kann besser lernen, indem man übt.
Indem + subordinate clause, main clause By doing..., one can... Indem man zuhört, kann man mehr lernen.

Examples: - Man kann Stress reduzieren, indem man Sport treibt. (You can reduce stress by exercising) - Sie hat ihre Noten verbessert, indem sie mehr gelernt hat. (She improved her grades by studying more) - Indem er regelmäßig trainiert, wurde er stärker. (He became stronger by training regularly)

Note: indem replaces durch + accusative: - durch das Lernen = indem man lernt

Die irgend-Wörter (Vague "somewhere/somehow" Words)

The prefix irgend- turns precise words into vague, indefinite ones — useful when you cannot remember the details exactly:

Word Meaning Example
irgendwo somewhere Meine Unterlagen sind irgendwo im Büro.
irgendwann sometime / one day Irgendwann passt sich jeder neuen Technologien an.
irgendwie somehow / in some way Das Leben ist irgendwie anders geworden.
irgendjemand anyone/someone (subject) Kann mir irgendjemand helfen?
irgendein- some / any Am Ende bleibt irgendeine Gewohnheit übrig.

Additional examples: - Viele alte Gewohnheiten verschwinden irgendwann einfach. (Many old habits simply disappear at some point) - Das neue System ist irgendwie besser als das alte. (The new system is somehow better than the old one)

💡 Golden note: The opposite of the irgend- family is the set of all-inclusive words: überall (everywhere), immer (always), alles (everything). Notice the difference: Irgendwo regnet es (it is raining somewhere) ≠ Es regnet überall (it is raining everywhere).

Review: Verb Position

Before finishing level B1, a quick review of the most important sentence-building rule: where does the conjugated verb stand?

Sentence type Position of the conjugated verb Example
Aussagesatz (statement) position 2 Die Digitalisierung verändert unser Leben.
Ja/Nein-Frage (yes/no question) position 1 Verändert die Digitalisierung unser Leben?
W-Frage (question with a question word) position 2 after the question word Wie verändert die Digitalisierung unser Leben?
Nebensatz (subordinate clause) at the end of the subordinate clause Viele Menschen bleiben optimistisch, weil sich vieles verändert.

Examples: - Der Wandel bietet neue Chancen. → Bietet der Wandel neue Chancen? (statement → question) - Viele Chancen entstehen, weil der Wandel neue Wege bietet. (In the subordinate clause the verb moves to the end)

💡 Golden note: With compound tenses in a subordinate clause, the auxiliary verb (haben/sein/modal verb) stands at the very end, and the Partizip II or infinitive comes before it: ..., weil sich vieles verändert hat.
