2. 📖 Reading Passage

In a studio, a team of five students is working on a project. They need to cooperate because each member has different skills. Anna is good at presentations, Max can program well, and Sara has experience in project management.

At the beginning, it was difficult to agree. Everyone had a different idea. But after many discussions, they found a compromise. They divided their tasks and decided to work together every Friday.

Each team member has their own responsibility. Anna prepares the presentation, Max writes the code, and Sara coordinates the work. If everyone does their tasks well, the project will be a success.

The most important thing in cooperation is listening and respecting the opinions of others. Sometimes you have to make compromises. But in the end, the result is better when you work as a team.

Key vocabulary: - sich einigen = to agree - Aufgaben verteilen = to divide tasks - Kompromisse eingehen = to make compromises - respektieren = to respect

Partizipial Attributes (Participial Adjectives)

In this lesson we learn how to use Partizip I and Partizip II as adjectives in sentences:

Type Structure Example
Partizip I (present) das + verb+end + noun Der arbeitende Student lernt fleißig.
Partizip II (past) das + verb+Partizip II + noun Der von uns entwickelte Plan war erfolgreich.

Examples: - Das von Anna vorbereitete Material war sehr gut. (The material Anna prepared was excellent) - Die gemeinsam erarbeiteten Ergebnisse überraschten alle. (The results they worked on together surprised everyone) - Der in der Gruppe besprochene Vorschlag wurde angenommen. (The proposal discussed in the group was accepted)

Note: Partizipial attributes replace subordinate clauses: - Der von uns entwickelte Plan = Der Plan, den wir entwickelt haben

Doppelkonjunktion "zwar ... aber" (The Paired Contrast Connector)

The simple connector aber only contrasts two things, while the paired connector zwar ... aber first concedes part of the truth and then contrasts it with what goes against it:

Structure Meaning Example
Main clause, aber + main clause but... Er ist jung, aber erfahren.
Zwar ..., aber ... it is true that... but... Er ist zwar jung, aber unerfahren.

Examples from the context of teamwork: - Das Projekt war zwar schwierig, aber das Team hat es geschafft. (It's true the project was hard, but the team pulled it off) - Zwar arbeitet jedes Mitglied allein, aber sie treffen sich jeden Freitag. (It's true each member works alone, but they meet every Friday) - Man muss zwar Kompromisse eingehen, aber am Ende ist das Ergebnis besser. (It's true you have to make compromises, but in the end the result is better)

💡 Golden note: zwar never stands alone — it always needs its partner aber. And if a sentence starts with zwar (position 1), the conjugated verb follows immediately: Zwar war es anfangs schwer, ...

Infinitive Clauses with "ohne ... zu" (without doing something)

We use ohne ... zu when an action happens without the expected action taking place:

Structure Meaning Example
Main clause, ohne + zu + infinitive without doing... Er verlässt das Meeting, ohne sich zu verabschieden.
Ohne + zu + infinitive, main clause without doing... Ohne den Fehler zuzugeben, wird es schwer, im Team zu arbeiten.

Examples: - Sie hat die Aufgabe übernommen, ohne lange nachzudenken. (She took on the task without thinking long) - Man erreicht kein gutes Ergebnis, ohne zusammenzuarbeiten. (You don't achieve a good result without cooperating)

Note: With separable verbs, zu goes between the prefix and the verb: zusammenarbeiten → ohne zusammenzuarbeiten.

💡 Golden note: If the subject differs between the two clauses, we do not use ohne ... zu but ohne dass: Er ging, ohne dass jemand ihn bemerkte. (He left without anyone noticing him)

Compounds with Fugen-s (the linking element -s)

When two nouns are combined, a linking element may appear between them — the most common one is -s. Notice how important words from the world of work are built:

Compound noun Formation Meaning
der Lebenslauf das Leben + s + der Lauf CV/resumé
der Arbeitsplatz die Arbeit + s + der Platz workplace
die Arbeitsgruppe die Arbeit + s + die Gruppe working group/team
der Verantwortungsbereich die Verantwortung + s + der Bereich area of responsibility

Examples: - Im Lebenslauf beschreibt man seine Erfahrungen. (In your CV you describe your experience) - Jedes Mitglied hat seinen eigenen Verantwortungsbereich. (Each member has their own area of responsibility)

💡 Golden note: There is no absolute rule for the linking element — some compounds have no linker at all: das Teammitglied, die Zusammenarbeit. So learn each compound as a single unit as it is.
