📚 Core rule

Certain verbs require the infinitive without "zu". This mainly includes the six modal verbs (können, dürfen, müssen, sollen, wollen, möchten) and a group of other verbs such as bleiben, gehen, kommen, lernen, sehen, hören, helfen, lassen.

Typical verbs

  • Modal verbs: can, may, must, should, want, would like – always followed by a bare infinitive.
  • Ich kann gut schwimmen.
  • Er muss jetzt arbeiten.
  • Other verbs that do not use "zu":
  • bleiben – Wir bleiben sitzen.
  • gehen – Wir gehen essen.
  • kommen – Komm sofort!
  • lernen – Sie will schneller lernen.
  • sehen – Ich kann das nicht sehen.
  • hören – Er darf nicht laut hören.
  • helfen – Kannst du mir helfen?
  • lassen – Sie lässt es machen.
