💡 Tip: These basic adjectives are crucial for comparisons. Memorize them well — they're all used in the comparative lesson!

⚠️ Caution: Some adjectives have irregular forms: gut → besser (not guter) and viel → mehr (not vieler). Memorize these!


3. 📝 Komparativ und Superlativ — Comparative and Superlative

Komparativ — comparing two things

Rule: Adjective + -er (+ possible vowel change/Umlaut)

Adjective Komparativ Sentence
klein kleiner Mein Auto ist kleiner als deins. (My car is smaller than yours)
groß größer Dein Haus ist größer als meins.
jung jünger Sie ist jünger als ich.
billig billiger Diese Jacke ist billiger als jene.

Pattern: A ist Adjektiv-er als B. (A is adjective-er than B)

Superlativ — the highest degree

Rule: am + adjective + -sten (or -esten)

Adjective Superlativ Sentence
klein am kleinsten Mein Auto ist am kleinsten. (My car is the smallest)
groß am größten Dein Haus ist am größten.
jung am jüngsten Sie ist am jüngsten.
alt am ältesten Er ist am ältesten.

Pattern: A ist am Adjektiv-sten.

Irregular Forms

Special Spelling Cases

💡 Tip: Most one-syllable adjectives with a/o/u change the vowel: alt → aelter, groß → groesser, jung → juenger, dumm → duemmer. This is called Umlaut!

Maria 120 Euro. Die rote kostet nur 80 Euro. 120 Euros. The red one costs only 80 Euros.

Maria Stimmt. Welche findest du am besten? Right. Which one do you like best?

6. 📝 Adjektive vor dem Nomen (der/die/das) — Adjectives Before Nouns with the Definite Article

In this lesson we used the adjective after the verb: Das Auto ist schnell. But when the adjective comes before the noun, it needs an ending. With the definite article (der/die/das) the endings are very easy:

Nominativ und Akkusativ — Nominative and Accusative

Examples:

Deutsch English
Der große Koffer ist zu schwer. The big suitcase is too heavy.
Ich nehme die kleine Tasche. I'll take the small bag.
Das billige Handy funktioniert gut. The cheap phone works well.
Kennst du den neuen Laden? Do you know the new shop?

7. 📝 Präposition „aus" für Material — The Preposition "aus" for Material

The preposition aus means "from" for places (Ich komme aus Syrien), and it is also used to indicate the material or substance something is made of:

ein Tisch aus Holz a table made of wood
eine Flasche aus Plastik a bottle made of plastic
eine Kette aus Silber a chain made of silver
ein Becher aus Papier a cup made of paper

Ist der Ring echt? Ja, er ist aus Gold. (Yes, it's made of gold.)

⚠️ Note: After "aus" in the material sense, no article is used: aus Holz, aus Gold — not aus dem Holz.

💡 Final Tip: Comparisons are in every conversation! Practice using als after comparatives (groesser als) and am before superlatives (am groessten). This way you'll speak more precisely!
