2. 📖 Reading Passage

Important vocabulary from the text: - die Möglichkeit (die Möglichkeiten) — the possibility / option - Vor- und Nachteile — advantages and disadvantages - die Qualität prüfen — to check quality - Preise vergleichen — to compare prices - das Personal — the staff - das Paket — the package - günstiger als — cheaper than (comparison)

Comparing nouns and adjectives (Komparison)

In German, we use Komparison to compare two or more things. There are three degrees: Grundstufe (base), Vergleichsstufe (comparative), and Superlativ (superlative).

Formation rules:

Degree Rule Example
Grundstufe (base) base adjective groß (big)
Vergleichsstufe (comparative) + er größer (bigger)
Superlativ (superlative) am + am +sten am größten (the biggest)

Full comparison table:

Base Comparative Superlative Meaning
billig billiger am billigsten cheapest
teuer teurer am teuersten most expensive
gut besser am besten best
schlecht schlechter am schlechtesten worst
groß größer am größten biggest
klein kleiner am kleinsten smallest
schnell schneller am schnellsten fastest
langsam langsamer am langsamsten slowest

Examples:

German English
Das Brot ist billiger als der Kuchen. The bread is cheaper than the cake.
Dieser Laden ist der billigste in der Stadt. This store is the cheapest in the city.
Qualität ist besser als Quantität. Quality is better than quantity.
Das ist das beste Angebot! This is the best offer!

💡 Tip: Vowel changes occur in short adjectives (a → ä, o → ö, u → ü): - groß → größer - gut → besser

📝 Additional Grammar — Superlative Before Nouns and obwohl

1) Superlative before the noun (Superlativ vor dem Nomen)

In the lesson table you learned the adverbial form am + …sten. When a superlative adjective stands before the noun, however, it needs a definite article and a declension ending like any other adjective:

Adverbial form Before the noun (declined) Example
am günstig der günstigste Preis Das ist der günstigste Preis im Internet.
am billigsten die billigsten Produkte Wir kaufen immer die billigsten Produkte.
am besten das beste Angebot Hier finden Sie das beste Angebot.
am schnellsten der schnellste Versand Wir bieten den schnellsten Versand an.

💡 Golden tip: Some superlatives are irregular and must be memorized: gut → der beste, hoch → der höchste, viel → der meiste, nah → der nächste.

2) obwohl — although

obwohl introduces a concessive subordinate clause (a contrast to what you would expect), and the verb goes to the end of that clause. You studied it in detail in Lektion 4 — here is a quick reminder in a shopping context:

German English
Obwohl der Online-Preis niedriger ist, kaufen viele Menschen im Laden ein. Although the online price is lower, many people shop in stores.
Viele Kunden bestellen online, obwohl die Lieferung länger dauert. Many customers order online although delivery takes longer.
Er kauft lieber im Geschäft, obwohl es teurer ist. He prefers shopping in the store although it is more expensive.

💡 Tip: The difference from trotzdem: obwohl connects two clauses with the verb at the end of its own clause, while trotzdem is an adverb in position 1 that pulls the verb directly after it: Der Preis ist hoch, trotzdem kaufen wir.
