An article for level A2 — the story of Karim, who started a small bicycle repair workshop, and learned a lesson in responsibility from his shared flat.

✨ The Story

A simple dream

Karim has had a clear dream for years: he wants to work for himself. In the evenings, after work, he repairs old bicycles for friends and neighbors, and everyone praises his skill:

  • Karim hat einen Traum: Er möchte selbstständig arbeiten. — Karim has a dream: he wants to work independently.
  • In seiner Freizeit repariert er alte Fahrräder. — In his free time he repairs old bicycles.
  • Seine Freunde sagen: „Du machst das sehr gut!“ — His friends say: "You do that very well!"
  • Also mietet er einen kleinen Raum in der Stadt. — So he rents a small room in the city.

The beginning is hard

In the first month Karim understands that a small business needs great discipline. The repairs are not the only work — there are also numbers and appointments:

  • Am Anfang ist alles schwer. — At the beginning everything is hard.
  • Karim kauft Werkzeug, plant Termine und schreibt Rechnungen. — Karim buys tools, plans appointments and writes invoices.
  • Er arbeitet oft zehn Stunden am Tag, aber er sagt: „Ich bin mein eigener Chef, das macht mich glücklich.“ — He often works ten hours a day, but he says: "I am my own boss, that makes me happy."
  • Nach einem Jahr kommen jeden Tag fünf bis zehn Kunden. — After a year, five to ten customers come every day.

Living with others

In the evening Karim goes home — and it is not an ordinary home, but a shared flat with four people. Here he learns another lesson in responsibility:

  • Abends fährt Karim nach Hause — in eine Wohngemeinschaft mit vier Personen. — In the evening Karim drives home — to a shared apartment with four people.
  • Zusammenleben braucht Regeln: Wer putzt die Küche? Wann darf man Musik hören? — Living together needs rules: Who cleans the kitchen? When may one listen to music?
  • Im WG-Meeting sprechen alle ruhig über Probleme. — In the flat meeting, everyone talks calmly about problems.
  • Karim findet: „Zuhören ist genauso wichtig wie Reparieren.“ — Karim thinks: "Listening is just as important as repairing."

Today Karim is no longer alone in the workshop; he also helps young people who want to start their own small projects. His advice is written on the wall for everyone to see:
