Genusregeln — Gender of German Nouns (der, die, das)
📺 Instructional Video
An instructional video explaining this grammar topic with practical examples.
🎯 Lesson Goals
- Identify the three grammatical genders of German nouns.
- Learn the most reliable patterns to choose the correct article.
- Apply the rules to real‑world examples.
📚 Core Rule
German nouns are masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). The gender is intrinsic; there is no logical link to meaning, but many nouns follow predictable endings.
| Gender | Typical article | Example (masc.) | Example (fem.) | Example (neut.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Masculine (der) | der | der Mann (man) | — | — |
| Feminine (die) | die | — | die Frau (woman) | — |
| Neuter (das) | das | — | — | das Kind (child) |
General patterns for gender determination
- Masculine (der): nouns ending in -er, -en, -ig, -ling, many profession titles, most days, months, seasons, and nouns with a male biological reference.
- Feminine (die): nouns ending in -e, -heit, -keit, -ung, -ion, -ur, -schaft, -tät (e.g., die Freiheit, die Zeitung).
- Neuter (das): nouns ending in -chen, -lein, -ment, -um, -ma, -tel. Also many infinitives used as nouns (das Essen).
- Exceptions: das Mädchen (girl) is neuter because of the diminutive -chen; der Junge (boy) is masculine.
💡 Remember: patterns are helpful, but many nouns must be memorised. When in doubt, consult a dictionary.
Sample sentences
- der Hund — the dog (masc.) ✅
- die Katze — the cat (fem.) ✅
- das Buch — the book (neut.) ✅
- die Lehrerin — the female teacher (fem.) ⚠️ (note the suffix -in marks femininity).
