📝 Additional Grammar — Passive with Modal Verbs (Passiv mit Modalverben)
You learned the basic passive (Präsens and Präteritum) in Lektion 2; here we extend it with modal verbs — the most common form in medical and general instructions:
Structure: Modalverb + … + Partizip II + werden
| Active sentence (Aktiv) | Passive sentence (Passiv) |
|---|---|
| Der Arzt muss den Patienten untersuchen. | Der Patient muss untersucht werden. |
| Man muss das Medikament dreimal täglich nehmen. | Das Medikament muss dreimal täglich genommen werden. |
| Man kann die Tabletten mit Wasser einnehmen. | Die Tabletten können mit Wasser eingenommen werden. |
| Man muss das Rezept in der Apotheke vorlegen. | Das Rezept muss in der Apotheke vorgelegt werden. |
Word order: the conjugated modal verb stays in position 2, then the Partizip II, then the unconjugated werden at the end:
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Das Medikament muss sofort eingenommen werden. | The medication must be taken immediately. |
| Die Wunde muss täglich verbunden werden. | The wound must be dressed daily. |
| Der Befund kann online abgerufen werden. | The medical report can be retrieved online. |
💡 Golden tip: In a subordinate clause three verbs pile up at the end, and the conjugated modal verb comes last: Ich weiß, dass das Medikament eingenommen werden muss.
