📺 Instructional Video

An instructional video explaining this grammar topic with practical examples.

🎯 Lesson Goals

  • Understand how prefixes (Vorsilben) and suffixes (Nachsilben) expand word meaning.
  • Apply word‑formation rules to create new, meaningful nouns and verbs.
  • Recognise common patterns and avoid typical mistakes.

📚 Core Rule

In German you can attach prefixes before a stem or suffixes after a stem to change meaning or word class. The base word often stays unchanged in spelling; only the added element modifies the meaning.

Type Example (German) Meaning English translation
Prefix (Vorsilbe) ent‑ + kommenentkommen to escape escape
Suffix (Nachsilbe) ‑ung + BildBildung education education
Prefix + Suffix ver‑ + ‑lichver‑ständig‑lich comprehensibly comprehensibly

💡 Tips

  • Not every stem accepts every prefix; some require a vowel change (e.g., ver‑ often adds an e before the suffix).
  • Suffixes usually change the word class: ‑ung turns a verb into a noun, ‑lich turns a noun/adjective into an adjective.

✅ Example Sentences

German sentence Arabic translation
Das Entkommen ist gefährlich. الهروب خطر.
Die Bildung ist wichtig für die Zukunft. التعليم مهم للمستقبل.
Er ist verständlicherweise spät. هو متأخر بصورة منطقية.

📝 Exercises

✏️ Fill in the blank with the correct word: Write only one word in each field.

# Sentence (blank with hint) Answer
1 Das ___ ist gefährlich. (ent‑+kommen)
2 Die ___ ist wichtig. (‑ung)
3 Er ist ___‑lich. (ver‑ + ‑lich)
4 ___ ist das Gegenteil von „möglich“. (un‑)

🎯 Tips for Learners

  • Keep a list of common prefixes (ver‑, be‑, ent‑, miss‑) and suffixes (‑ung, ‑heit, ‑lich) to expand your vocabulary.
  • Practice forming words with both parts; the meaning often becomes transparent once you know the components.
  • Watch out for spelling changes in the stem when a prefix is added (e.g., ver often triggers an e insertion).
