📚 Core Rule

These connectors join two sentences and define the temporal relationship between them. The verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause:

Connector Meaning Usage Example
als when a single past event Als ich ein Kind war, wohnte ich in Kairo.
wenn when / whenever a repeated or future event Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.
nachdem after the second event follows it Nachdem ich gegessen hatte, ging ich schlafen.
bevor before the first event precedes the second Bevor wir essen, waschen wir uns die Hände.
während while / during two simultaneous events Er liest ein Buch, während sie kocht.
seit / seitdem since an ongoing period up to now Seitdem ich Deutsch lerne, lese ich einfache Texte.
bis until the end of the period Warte hier, bis ich zurückkomme.
sobald as soon as immediate succession Sobald ich das Geld habe, kaufe ich ein Fahrrad.
solange as long as duration tied to a time condition Du kannst bleiben, solange du willst.

als or wenn? The most common confusion

als wenn
Tense past only present, future and repetition
Meaning one specific event whenever it happens / when it happens
Example Als ich 18 war, zog ich aus. Wenn ich nach Hause komme, esse ich sofort.

⚠️ Quick rule: wenn = whenever; als = at that one single moment in the past.

nachdem and the tenses

The tense of the subordinate clause must be one step earlier than the main clause:

  • In the past: nachdem + Plusquamperfekt ← then Präteritum in the main clause: Nachdem er angekommen war, rief er mich an.
  • In the present/future: nachdem + Perfekt ← then Präsens: Nachdem ich gegessen habe, trinke ich einen Kaffee.
