💡 Tip: Always use the present tense (Präsens) when describing pictures — even if the photo is old!

4. 💬 Dialogue: In the Classroom

Lehrer: Guten Morgen, Klasse! Heute wiederholen wir die Mathematik. — Good morning, class! Today we are reviewing math.

Schüler: Guten Morgen, Herr Müller! — Good morning, Mr. Müller!

Lehrer: Anna, kannst du die Aufgabe an der Tafel erklären? — Anna, can you explain the problem on the board?

Anna: Ja, natürlich. Also... zuerst muss man die Zahlen addieren. — Yes, of course. So... first you have to add the numbers.

Lehrer: Sehr gut! Und was kommt danach? — Very good! And what comes next?

Anna: Danach multipliziert man das Ergebnis. — Then you multiply the result.

Lehrer: Perfekt! Hast du das verstanden, Tom? — Perfect! Did you understand that, Tom?

Tom: Ja, aber ich habe eine Frage. Kann ich die Aufgabe noch einmal erklären? — Yes, but I have a question. Can I explain the problem once more?

6. 📝 Komposita: Nomen + Nomen — Compound Nouns (Noun + Noun)

A compound noun (Kompositum) is formed from two or more words written as one word. The golden rule: the gender of the compound = the gender of the last part.

Compound Made of English
das Schulzeugnis die Schule + das Zeugnis school report card
der Elternabend die Eltern + der Abend parents' evening
das Klassenzimmer die Klasse + das Zimmer classroom
der Wortschatz das Wort + der Schatz vocabulary ("word treasure")
die Schulbank die Schule + die Bank school desk

💡 Tip: Look at words you already know from this lesson: Hausaufgabe = das Haus + die Aufgabe, Stundenplan = die Stunde + (n) + der Plan, and Lehrbuch = der Lehrer + das Buch. The gender always comes from the last part!

7. 📝 Verben mit festen Präpositionen — Verbs with Fixed Prepositions

Some verbs are linked to a fixed preposition with a specific case — memorize them together as one pair:

Verb + Preposition Case Example English
teilnehmen an Dative Ich nehme am Wettbewerb teil. to take part in
denken an Accusative Ich denke oft an die Prüfung. to think about/of
warten auf Accusative Wir warten auf den Lehrer. to wait for
fragen nach Dative Fragt er nach der Hausaufgabe? to ask about
sich interessieren für Accusative Sie interessiert sich für Geschichte. to be interested in

⚠️ Note: The preposition here is not optional and not translated word-for-word — it is denken an (to think about), not denken über. Learn each verb together with its preposition and case from the start.
