seit / seitdem — Since: Time and Reason

📚 Core Rule

seit answers the question Seit wann? (since when?) and always points to a point in time in the past whose effect continues into the present.

📌 seit and seitdem are fully interchangeable before a clause; seitdem simply makes it clearer that it works as a conjunction.

Examples

Seit einem Jahr lerne ich Deutsch. — I've been learning German for a year.
Seit 2019 arbeitet sie bei dieser Firma. — She has been working at this company since 2019.
Seit gestern habe ich starke Kopfschmerzen. — I've had a bad headache since yesterday.
Seitdem ich in Hamburg wohne, fahre ich oft mit dem Fahrrad. — Since I've been living in Hamburg, I often ride my bike.
Seit wir einen Hund haben, gehen wir jeden Tag spazieren. — Since we've had a dog, we go for a walk every day.

⚠️ Tense: Präsens, not Perfekt

The action started in the past but is still continuing, so both clauses (subordinate and main) use the present tense.

📌 If the action is finished in the past, don't use seit at all — use vor (ago): Vor einem Jahr habe ich in Berlin gewohnt.

💡 The Causal Meaning (B1)

Besides its temporal meaning, seitdem can implicitly answer the question why? — it introduces a change in the past that is the reason for the current situation.

Seitdem er weniger isst, hat er mehr Energie. — Since he eats less, he has more energy. (reason: eating less)
Seitdem du rauchst, hustest du oft. — Since you started smoking, you cough a lot. (reason: smoking)
Seitdem das neue Gesetz gilt, sind die Straßen sicherer. — Since the new law came into force, the streets are safer.

Difference from weil
